Stack of soft homemade whole wheat tortillas on a cream plate, one tortilla folded to show its flexible texture

Soft, flexible, and made with just four simple ingredients, these homemade whole wheat tortillas are an easy alternative to store-bought wraps. They’re perfect for chicken lunches, quesadillas, or meal prep—without preservatives or soybean oil.

Why You’ll Love These

  • Just four ingredients
  • Whole grain and naturally dairy-free and soy-free
  • Made with heart-friendly olive oil
  • Easy to freeze for busy weekdays

Prep: 15 minutes plus 10 minutes resting | Cook: 10–15 minutes | Yield: 8 tortillas

Ingredients

  • 2 cups white whole wheat flour (or regular whole wheat flour)
  • 3/4 cup warm water, plus more as needed
  • 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon fine salt

Instructions

  1. Stir together the flour and salt in a bowl.
  2. Add the warm water and olive oil. Mix into a soft dough. If crumbly, add water 1 teaspoon at a time.
  3. Knead on a lightly floured surface for 2–3 minutes until smooth. Cover and rest for 10 minutes.
  4. Divide into 8 balls. Roll each ball into a thin circle, about 7–8 inches across.
  5. Heat a dry skillet over medium-high heat. Cook each tortilla for 30–60 seconds per side, until small brown spots appear. Avoid overcooking, which makes tortillas stiff.
  6. Stack the warm tortillas under a clean kitchen towel to keep them soft and flexible.

Tips for Soft Tortillas

Roll the dough thin, keep the skillet hot, and cover cooked tortillas immediately. If your whole wheat flour absorbs more water, add a little extra until the dough feels soft but not sticky.

Storage & Meal Prep

Cool completely. Refrigerate in an airtight container for up to 4 days, or freeze with parchment between tortillas for up to 2 months. Reheat briefly in a warm skillet to restore flexibility.

Heart-Healthy Notes

Whole wheat flour provides whole grains and fiber, while olive oil supplies mostly unsaturated fats. These tortillas are a simple base for chicken, beans, avocado, and plenty of vegetables. Nutrition varies by flour brand and tortilla size.
